Annuity glossary

Cap Rate

The maximum interest an indexed annuity or indexed universal life policy will credit for a given term, no matter how well the underlying index performs. Insurers can usually change caps at renewal, so the cap that sold the product is not guaranteed for the life of the contract. Lower caps mean lower growth potential. The contract explains the exact calculation period, limits, charges, and renewal terms that apply. Any guarantee is backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer.
